Monument to the Fueros
The Monument to the Fueros stands on Paseo de Sarasate in Pamplona, opposite the Palace of Navarre. At 23.40 metres high, it combines a pentagonal base with five columns that symbolise the five merindades of Navarre, and is crowned by a bronze matron of the Fueros holding the chains of the Navarrese coat of arms and a parchment with the inscription 'Ley Foral'. At its base, five bronze plaques —two in Basque and three in Spanish— carry texts alluding to the fueros. The work, in an eclectic style, was designed by the architect Manuel Martínez de Ubago and sculpted by his brother José and the marble worker Ramón Carmona. Erected by public subscription in the early 20th century, it commemorates the Gamazada of 1893 and has become an icon of Navarre's foral heritage.
