Peggy Guggenheim Collection
Peggy Guggenheim's collection of modern art is housed in the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, an 18th-century palace on the banks of the Grand Canal, in Dorsoduro. Peggy bought it in 1949 and lived there for about thirty years; in 1951 she began showing her works to the public. In 1976 she donated the palace and some 300 works to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, and she died in 1979. The foundation reopened the collection in April 1980. Its holdings include Picasso's The Poet (1911), Duchamp's Sad Young Man in a Train, Kandinsky's Landscape with Red Spots No. 2, and works by Dalí, Miró, Magritte, Mondrian, Brâncuși and Pollock. A loan from the Mattioli collection brings Italian Futurism, with Boccioni. The garden, now the Nasher Sculpture Garden and completed in 1995, holds Peggy's ashes. Eating and drinking are not allowed inside, nor in the garden.
