Punta della Dogana
Punta della Dogana is the triangular tip where the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal meet, and the building that occupies it was the maritime customs house, the Dogana da Mar. Giuseppe Benoni rebuilt it on top of an earlier complex from the 15th century, and the warehouses were completed in 1682. On the corner, two atlantes hold up a golden globe with Fortune, which turns with the wind. The building fell into disuse in the late 1980s; in 2007 the city council launched a competition, which François Pinault won, and Tadao Ando directed the renovation, completed in 2009. Ando kept the brick walls and the timber trusses, reinforced the foundations and added a concrete cube in the central space. Today it hosts exhibitions from the Pinault Collection. From the point you can see the Bacino di San Marco, the Doge's Palace and San Giorgio Maggiore, and the Salute to one side.
