La Fenice Theatre
The Gran Teatro La Fenice opened on 16 May 1792 to a design by Giannantonio Selva, chosen in a competition. A fire destroyed it on 13 December 1836; the Meduna brothers rebuilt it and it reopened on 26 December 1837. Another fire, set deliberately, razed it on 29 January 1996. The reconstruction followed the motto 'as it was, where it was' and was directed by Aldo Rossi; the theatre was handed over in December 2003 and resumed performances with La traviata in November 2004. The visit takes in its stucco and gold salons. It has a royal box that was made in 1808 for Napoleon, removed after the revolt of 1848, restored in 1849 and redecorated by Giambattista Meduna in 1854. The Sale Apollinee, badly damaged in 1996, were restored with traditional materials and techniques.
