Kitanomaru Park

Kitanomaru Park is a public park in Chiyoda, Tokyo, located just north of the Imperial Palace. It occupies what was the northern section of Edo Castle, known as Kitanomaru, and retains two original castle gates: Tayasu-mon and Shimizu-mon. Tayasu-mon, built in 1685, is one of the oldest surviving structures from the original castle and features a defensive design with an outer Korai-mon-style gate and a fortified inner Yagura-mon gate, with stacked stone walls forming a narrow defensive courtyard. The park is almost encircled by deep moats and defensive fortifications from the original castle. Inside the park are the Nippon Budokan, a sports and performance venue, the Science Museum and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. The park opened in 1969; the area was previously known as Daikanchō. It is a green space used for recreation and culture, and hosts events at the Budokan.
