East Gardens of the Imperial Palace
The East Gardens of the Imperial Palace occupy parts of the former Honmaru, Ninomaru and Sannomaru precincts of Edo Castle, and were laid out as a garden adjoining the Imperial Palace and opened to the public in 1968. Visitors can walk among the foundations of the castle's main keep, the Ōte-mon gate — once the castle's main entrance — the Fujimi-tamon defence house and the Fujimi-yagura tower. The Ninomaru area contains the Ninomaru Garden, the Bairin-zaka slope, a small wood and an iris garden. The grounds also include the Suwa-no-cha-ya teahouse, built by Emperor Meiji in 1912, the Toukagakudo (Imperial Concert Hall) and the Sannomaru Shozokan museum. Admission is free and no advance booking is required; the garden is closed on Mondays and Fridays, and opening hours vary by season.
