People's Square

People's Square is a large public square in Huangpu District, Shanghai, located south of Nanjing Road (West) and north of Huaihai Road (East). It houses the seat of the municipal government and serves as the reference point for measuring distances on almost all of the municipality's roads. At its centre stands the Shanghai Museum, with large fountains immediately to the north. The square is also home to the Shanghai Grand Theatre and the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre. Its history dates back to a racecourse owned by the Shanghai Race Club; after horse racing and gambling were banned, part of the site was turned into a public square, and in the 1990s the municipal government and the Shanghai Museum were relocated here. Traces of the racecourse survive: the club buildings became the Shanghai Art Museum and part of the track became People's Park. The square is surrounded by landmark buildings such as the Park Hotel (the tallest in Asia between 1934 and 1952), Tomorrow Square, Shimao International Plaza and Raffles City. It is easily reached via People's Square metro station, which connects lines 1, 2 and 8, and several bus stops line its north and south sides.
