Madrid's great park began as the pleasure garden of Philip IV's Buen Retiro palace and has been open to the public since 1868. Since 2021 it has formed part, along with Paseo del Prado, of the Paisaje de la Luz World Heritage Site. Its 118 hectares include the great lake with the monument to Alfonso XII, the Crystal Palace, the rose garden and the statue of the Fallen Angel, one of the few in the world dedicated to the devil.
