A monumental gate commissioned by Charles III from Francesco Sabatini and opened in 1778, it was the first great Neoclassical gate in Europe, predating even the Brandenburg Gate. It has five openings and its two façades are different from each other. It once marked the entrance to the city along the road to Alcalá and today stands at the centre of the Plaza de la Independencia, next to the Retiro.
