Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord (Vinohrady)

The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord, in Jiřího z Poděbrad Square in the Vinohrady district, is the work of the Slovene architect Jože Plečnik and was built between 1928 and 1932. It is considered the most important Czech religious building of the 20th century. Its form recalls Noah's Ark. The façade is dominated by a flat tower 42 metres high that takes up the whole width of the front, with an enormous glass clock whose face is 7.6 metres in diameter. Inside there is no pulpit; above the white marble altar hangs a golden Christ surrounded by six Czech patron saints larger than life size. The vestibule lets you peek inside daily, and the full interior can be seen in the slots before Mass.
