Magdalena Bridge
A medieval bridge over the River Arga by which the Camino de Santiago enters Pamplona. It was built in the 12th century, of Romanesque origin, and in the 16th century it was remodelled with Gothic elements; it is made of stone and brick and the last restoration was in 1963. It takes its name from the Magdalena district, on the left bank, and crosses the river in the area known as the Caparroso beach, within the Arga River Park, with the Redín bastion and the walls of the old town in the background. Next to the bridge is a stone wayside cross that the city of Santiago de Compostela gave in 1965 to the first Association of Friends of the Camino de Santiago, based in Estella. It was declared a National Monument in 1939 and is now a Bien de Interés Cultural. With its humpback profile it recalls the Romanesque bridge at Puente la Reina, also on the Navarrese Camino. From it begins the climb to the Portal de Francia, the gate through which pilgrims enter the old town.
