Basilica of San Fermín de Aldapa
The basilica is in the Navarrería, the oldest district of Pamplona, on Calle Dos de Mayo, next to the Palace of the Kings of Navarre. Tradition places the birthplace of San Fermín here; Roman remains turned up in the excavations, including a mosaic and parts of a bathhouse. Around 1255 there was a chapel of San Pedro, and by 1531 it was already called San Fermín. The church was rebuilt from the foundations around 1701, and from 1883 it was occupied by the Claretian missionaries, who refurbished it; Julián Arteaga redid the façade in 1896. It has a Latin cross plan, with three naves of four bays, a barrel vault with lunettes and a dome with a lantern over the crossing. Its high altarpiece, from 1912, shows the Sacred Heart of Mary on the lower level and San Fermín between the coats of arms of Navarre and Pamplona on the upper level.
