Hymettus

Mount Hymettus, located south of Athens, is known for its extensive limestone landscapes, rocky areas and pastureland, as well as its forests in the northern part and numerous caves, most notably Koutouki Cave on the eastern slope near Paiania. On its slopes are several notable Byzantine monasteries, such as Kaisariani Monastery and the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, as well as ancient archaeological remains and a quarrymen's hut from antiquity. Visitors can walk trails that cross areas where beekeeping and marble quarrying were historically practised, and enjoy panoramic views of Athens and its surroundings from various points on the mountain.
