National Gallery of Athens

The National Gallery of Athens is Greece's leading art museum, dedicated to Greek and European art from the 14th to the 20th century. Its permanent collection includes an extensive representation of post-Byzantine Greek art and a valuable collection of European Renaissance painting. Among its holdings are the 80 prints of Francisco Goya's Los Caprichos series, acquired in 1961. The main building, on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, reopened in March 2021 after eight years of refurbishment. The museum has more than 20,000 works of painting, sculpture, printmaking and other art forms. In addition, the National Sculpture Gallery (Glyptotheque), in Goudi Military Park, holds collections of 19th- and 20th-century Greek sculpture. The museum also has branches in Nafplion, Sparta and Corfu.
