Stoa of Attalos
The Stoa of Attalos is a long two-storey colonnade, about 115 by 20 metres, which Attalos II of Pergamon (159-138 BC) gave to Athens. It had Doric columns on the outside and Ionic columns on the inside of the ground floor, and behind them a row of 42 rooms that served as shops. The Herulians burned its wooden structure in the year 267. It was rebuilt between 1953 and 1956 by the American School of Classical Studies with funds from John D. Rockefeller Jr. and some 150 workers; it opened as a museum on 3 September 1956. Today it is the Museum of the Ancient Agora, with finds from the Neolithic to the post-Byzantine period and pieces from Athenian democracy. It stands on the east side of the Agora, at 24 Adrianou Street.
