Stoa Poikile

The Stoa Poikile, or Painted Stoa, was a public building erected around 460 BC at the north-western corner of the Athenian Agora, to the left of the Panathenaic Way. It was the first known building in Athens to combine the Doric and Ionic orders: the exterior featured a Doric colonnade with a triglyph-and-metope frieze, while the interior had a colonnade of slenderer Ionic columns. It housed four famous paintings by Polygnotus, Micon and Panaenus, including the Battle of Marathon, along with bronze shields captured from the Spartans. From the 4th century BC it was a place where philosophers taught; Zeno of Citium taught there from around 300 BC, and the Stoic school took its name from it. Today only the western corner has been excavated, visible since 1980 between Adrianou and Astingos Streets, about six metres below the current ground level. Visitors can see the foundations of the west wall, sections of three original steps with marks from metal clamps, the base of the last outer column, and one inner column still in situ.
