Kyū-Iwasaki-tei Garden
The Kyū-Iwasaki-tei Garden, in Tokyo, is the former site of the residence of the Iwasaki family, founders of Mitsubishi. Three buildings survive today: a two-storey Western-style house with a basement, designed by British architect Josiah Conder and completed in 1896, featuring Jacobean-style decoration with Islamic motifs and Kinkarakami wallpaper; a Japanese house in shoin-zukuri style, of which the great hall survives with paintings attributed to Hashimoto Gahō; and a billiard room in Swiss chalet style, also designed by Conder, linked to the main house by an underground passage. The garden, which retains elements of an Edo-period daimyo garden, such as stones and lanterns, is an early example of a modern lawn garden. The complex is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
