Südgelände Nature Park

The Südgelände Nature Park covers 18 hectares on the former Tempelhof marshalling yard, in the Schöneberg district. Visitors follow paths through ruderal vegetation that has recolonised the old tracks and discover historic railway infrastructure: a 1940 DRB Class 50 steam locomotive, a turntable, a 50-metre water tower from 1927 and two large railway flyovers (Überwerfungsbauwerk). The former locomotive shed is used for theatre, dance and performance events. Installations and sculptures by the Odious group are dotted throughout the park and are described as one of its distinctive features. The park supports great biodiversity, with 366 species of ferns and seed plants, 49 of fungi, 49 of birds, 14 of grasshoppers and crickets, 57 of spiders and 95 of bees, many of them threatened.
