Frioul Islands
The Frioul Islands are a group of four islands (Pomègues, Ratonneau, If and Tiboulen) located about 4 km from Marseille. Pomègues and Ratonneau are connected by the Digue Berry dyke, built in 1822. On If island stands the Château d'If, famous for its link to the novel The Count of Monte Cristo. Ratonneau, a former military site, has a tourist hub with flats, shops, a holiday centre and a marina. Pomègues is the larger island and had a permanent population of about 100 people in 2005. The archipelago is part of Marseille's 7th arrondissement.
