Pariser Platz

Pariser Platz (Paris Square) is a rectangular square of 1.5 hectares immediately east of the Brandenburg Gate, in the Mitte district, forming the western end of the Unter den Linden boulevard. It was built between 1732 and 1734 under Frederick William I's expansion plans, originally surrounded by baroque town houses, and received its current name in 1814 to commemorate the Treaty of Paris. Before the Second World War it was Berlin's grandest square, home to the American and French embassies, the Hotel Adlon and the Academy of Arts. After the wartime bombing raids, only the Brandenburg Gate remained standing, and during the division of the city the square lay within the GDR's restricted zone, next to the Wall. Since reunification in 1990 it has been rebuilt as a prestigious urban space, with strict rules on building height and stone cladding. Today visitors find the Brandenburg Gate, the Liebermann House, the Palais am Pariser Platz, the French Embassy, the Hotel Adlon, the Academy of Arts, the United States Embassy and the Haus Sommer (Commerzbank), among other buildings. The square is closed to motor traffic and has the Brandenburger Tor S-Bahn and U-Bahn station nearby. In 2002 and 2003, the grounds of the then-new American embassy hosted the first exhibitions of the United Buddy Bears.
