Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe occupies a sloping 19,000-square-metre field covered by a grid of 2,711 concrete slabs between 0.2 and 4.8 metres tall. The slabs are designed to create an uneasy, disorientating atmosphere, and the whole is meant to represent a supposedly ordered system that has lost touch with human reason. An underground annexe called the Ort der Information (Place of Information) preserves the known names of Jewish Holocaust victims, obtained from the Israeli museum Yad Vashem. Guided tours engage participants in discussion and walk through the open-air field of slabs before ending with fast-track access to the Ort der Information exhibition.
