Tate Britain
Tate Britain opened in 1897 as the National Gallery of British Art, largely financed by the sugar magnate Henry Tate, who donated his collection of British art and paid for the building. It was built on the site of the old Millbank Prison, beside the Thames, with a classical portico designed by Sidney R. J. Smith. The museum brings together British art from 1500 to the present day, including works by Hogarth, Constable, the Pre-Raphaelites and William Blake. The Clore Gallery, a 1987 annexe by the architect James Stirling, houses in rotating displays the bequest of J. M. W. Turner: nearly 300 oil paintings and some 30,000 drawings and watercolours that the painter left when he died in 1851, the largest collection of his work in the world. The building changed its name from Tate Gallery to Tate Britain in 2000, when the international art collection moved to the new Tate Modern.
