Museum of Decorative Arts (Strasbourg)
The museum occupies the ground floor of the Palais Rohan, the former residence of the prince-bishops built beside the cathedral in the 1730s. One part of the route lets you visit the apartments of the Cardinals of Rohan, decorated with stucco, frescoes, trompe-l'œil, tapestries, chandeliers, chinoiseries and Rococo and Empire furniture. The other part houses a collection of Alsatian applied arts from 1681 to 1870, with porcelain from the Hannong brothers' factory, gilded silverware by the Imlin and Kirstein families, clockmaking and original pieces from the cathedral's first astronomical clock, including the automaton cockerel of 1354. Also on display are a reconstructed sitting room from the Hôtel Oesinger (1750s) and a selection of mechanical toys from the Tomi Ungerer donation.
