Tavera Hospital
The Hospital de Tavera is a large Renaissance building of palatial appearance with an Italian-style rusticated façade, two twin two-storey colonnaded courtyards and a church of Genoese marble with a single nave and a dome on pendentives. Inside you visit the Fundación Lerma Museum, with paintings by El Greco, Zurbarán, Ribera, Titian, Tintoretto and Luca Giordano, among others, and El Greco's sculpture of the Risen Christ. The church preserves Cardinal Tavera's white marble tomb by Alonso Berruguete and an altarpiece designed by El Greco and executed by his son Jorge Manuel. The complex also houses the Historical Archive of the Nobility and the hospital's old pharmacy, and has served as a setting for films such as Buñuel's Viridiana and Tristana.
