Church of San Moisè
A parish church in the San Marco sestiere, a few steps from the square, dedicated to the prophet Moses. Tradition places its foundation between the late 8th and early 9th centuries and its rebuilding in 947, by Moisè Valier. After a fire it was rebuilt, and the last reconstruction was completed in 1632, with money from the Fini family. The Baroque façade, from 1668, was designed by Alessandro Tremignon and paid for by the Fini brothers; it is covered in sculptures and reliefs and combines two orders of columns. Ruskin and other critics scorned it as exuberant. Inside, in a single nave, there is an altar with Moses Receiving the Tablets on Sinai, altars by Tremignon, a Washing of the Feet by Tintoretto and paintings by Girolamo Brusaferro. In the floor, a marker shows where the bones of the financier John Law were moved. The bell tower survived the reconstructions and was raised in the 16th century.
