Harry's Bar
Harry's Bar is on Calle Vallaresso, in the San Marco district, a few steps from the square. Giuseppe Cipriani opened it in 1931; the name comes from Harry Pickering, a wealthy young American to whom Cipriani lent money and who later financed the opening. The place is considered the birthplace of the Bellini, the cocktail of white peach purée and prosecco that Cipriani invented in 1948 and that is named after the painter Giovanni Bellini, and of carpaccio, thin slices of raw beef sirloin named after Vittore Carpaccio. Italy's Ministry of Culture declared it a national monument in 2001. Its patrons have included Ernest Hemingway, who mentions it in 'Across the River and into the Trees', Arturo Toscanini, Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Maria Callas and Orson Welles.
