Théâtre National de la Criée
La Criée occupies Marseille's former fish market, which opened in 1909 on the quai de Rive Neuve, on the Vieux-Port. The original façade, with the sign "Criée Libre aux Poissons", is listed as a historic monument, and the building has a metal structure. Fishing activity moved in 1976 to the port of Saumaty, near L'Estaque, and in 1981 it was converted into a theatre under the architect Bernard Guillaumot, who kept the façade. It has two halls, one with about 800 seats and a modular one with 280, and a foyer with a walkway from which you can see the sea. It is a National Drama Centre, with a programme of classical and contemporary repertoire and new writing. Robin Renucci has directed it since July 2022. There are no guided tours of the building: you go in with a performance ticket.
