Olšany Cemetery (Olšanské hřbitovy)

This is the largest cemetery in the Czech Republic, covering more than 50 hectares, with some 25,000 graves and around two million burials over its history. It came into being after the plague epidemic of 1679: in January 1680 the Old Town community bought land in the former village of Olšany for a plague cemetery, and from 1787 the decrees of Joseph II, which banned burials within the city walls, made it the central Catholic cemetery of the right bank. It is at Vinohradská 153, in Prague 3, and Jana Želivského street divides it into Olšany I (the main part) and Olšany II, where there is an Orthodox chapel and areas of honour. Karel Havlíček Borovský, Jan Werich, Jiří Voskovec, Ivan Hlinka and Jan Palach are buried here. It also has an ossuary with the remains of 3,155 First World War soldiers.
