Pamplona Town Hall (Ayuntamiento)
The Town Hall stands in Plaza Consistorial, in the heart of the Old Quarter, on a site fixed in 1423 by the Privilege of the Union at an equal distance from the city's former boroughs. The previous building was pulled down in 1753 and a new one designed by Juan Miguel de Goyeneta was built, opened in 1760. The façade, by José de Zay y Lorda, mixes late Baroque and neoclassicism with foliage in the decoration; above the door are Prudence and Justice, by José Jiménez, and higher up two Hercules and the allegory of Fame. Only the façade survives from that building, as the interior was rebuilt in 1951 to a design by the architect Yárnoz Orcoyen. From the balcony on the second floor, the chupinazo that opens the Sanfermines is launched every 6 July at 12:00. Guided tours take in the vestibule, the staircase with stained glass, the Reception Hall and the Council Chamber.
