A commemorative bronze column, about 50 metres tall, standing in the middle of Place de la Bastille. It does not commemorate the storming of the prison in 1789, but the Three Glorious Days, the days of 27 to 29 July 1830 that ended the reign of Charles X and brought Louis-Philippe to the throne. It was built between 1835 and 1840 and inaugurated on 28 July 1840. The shaft is made up of 21 cast-bronze drums, weighing more than 74 tonnes in total, on a white marble base with bronze reliefs. The names of those who died in the uprising are engraved in gold on the shaft, and at the top stands the Génie de la Liberté by Augustin Dumont, a gilded, winged figure balanced on one foot. The base houses a necropolis with the remains of several hundred victims of 1830 and of the 1848 revolution. It is now managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux, which only allows the necropolis to be seen on a guided tour; the upper parts are not open to visitors.
