Convent of Las Dueñas
The Convent of Las Dueñas is a Dominican convent for women founded in 1419 in Salamanca. Its church, the work of Fray Martín de Santiago, has a single Gothic nave with rib vaults and an apse with a Baroque altarpiece; outside, a Plateresque doorway stands out, with images of the Virgin, Saint Francis and Saint Dominic de Guzmán. The most remarkable feature is the cloister of 1533, with an irregular pentagonal plan and two storeys: the lower one with segmental arches on columns and medallions with heads in the spandrels, and the upper one with a flat entablature, columns and corbels. The capitals, full of imagination and variety, and the grotesques and monsters carved in the spandrels are unique. Remains of the original Mudéjar palace also survive, such as a pointed horseshoe arch in the upper cloister with black and green tiles.
