The Convent of San Esteban, in the Plaza del Concilio de Trento, is a Dominican complex that combines styles from late Gothic to Baroque, with the Plateresque façade as one of its greatest attractions. The church, with a single nave 27 metres high, houses a lantern reaching 44 metres, a large main altarpiece by José Benito de Churriguera, paintings by Antonio Palomino and a Virgin and Child attributed to Rubens. The Soto staircase, built between 1553 and 1556, is surprising for its revolutionary technique, supported only by the walls. The Cloister of the Kings and the chapter houses, the sacristy and the tomb of the Grand Duke of Alba complete a tour through history and sacred art. The convent is still the seat of the Dominican community and of the Pontifical Faculty of Theology, with visiting hours and liturgical celebrations open to the public.
