José Guerrero Centre
The Centro José Guerrero occupies an 1892 building on Calle Oficios, within the Alcaicería, the old silk quarter. It was built by Indalecio Ventura Sabatell as a warehouse, to a design by Modesto Cendoya; it was a printing works from 1901 and, between 1939 and 1983, the headquarters of the newspaper Patria. The museum opened here in 2000 after a refurbishment by Antonio Jiménez Torrecillas with the artist Gustavo Torner, which won an award from the Granada College of Architects in 2003. The galleries form a closed central box, which controls the light falling on the paintings, and are visited in an upward sequence. The route ends in an attic with a direct view of the cathedral. Guerrero was born in Granada in 1914, settled in New York in 1949 and became linked to the New York School and abstract expressionism, with very intense fields of colour. The collection is organised into works on canvas, works on paper and graphic work, and the centre also programmes temporary exhibitions.
