Tränenpalast
The Tränenpalast, a former border checkpoint at Friedrichstraße station, is today a free federal museum dedicated to the division of Germany. Inside, the original departure hall is preserved, with the grand staircase that led to passport and customs control, and an original control booth that lets visitors picture the atmosphere of the inspections. The permanent exhibition 'Tränenpalast. Ort der deutschen Teilung' brings together 570 original objects, documents, photographs, interviews with contemporary witnesses and biographies illustrating how the border shaped everyday life between 1962 and 1990. Visitors can tour the historic building, listen to the free audio guide in ten languages and join free public guided tours on the first and third Saturdays of the month at 3pm. The museum is barrier-free and has a tactile plan and braille relief.
