Shanghai Zoo

Shanghai Zoo is a large zoological park and ecological garden in the Changning district. It is home to more than 6,000 animals, with 600 species native to China, including the giant panda, South China tiger, gorilla, golden monkey, flamingo, blue-and-yellow macaw, red panda, African penguin, Asian elephant and giraffe. The site retains the layout of a former golf course, with 100,000 trees of nearly 600 species and 100,000 square metres of green space. The Swan Lake, with natural reeds and trees shading pelicans, geese, black swans and herons, is an example of its ecological approach. The zoo also holds seasonal events such as Butterfly Month, which in 2026 runs from 25 September to 25 October with displays of live native butterflies and an exhibition of American insects featuring 'world record' specimens.
