Matadero de Arganzuela

Matadero de Arganzuela is a former slaughterhouse and livestock market built between 1911 and 1925 to a design by the architect Luis Bellido y González, with warehouses in Neo-Mudéjar style. After it closed in 1996, it was converted into a contemporary art centre and cultural space known as Matadero Madrid, which opened in 2007. The twelve-hectare complex houses various spaces: the Cineteca, dedicated to documentary film and the permanent home of the Documenta Madrid festival; Nave 16, a multi-purpose exhibition space of more than 4,000 m²; the Naves del Español, run by the Teatro Español for the performing arts; the Central de Diseño, dedicated to graphic, product and spatial design; the Nave de Música, with radio and recording studios, a concert hall and rehearsal rooms; Intermediæ, an experimental art and community programme; the Avant Garden, with ecological and participatory activities; the Archivo Matadero, with documentation on visual arts, performing arts, architecture and public art; and the Palacio de Cristal de la Arganzuela, a greenhouse that recreates tropical and subtropical climates. The complex also includes the Casa del Lector, a cultural space dedicated to reading and books. The site retains original features such as the chimney and industrial warehouses, and is part of the Madrid Río area.
