St. Charles's Church
St. Charles's Church, known as the Karlskirche, is a masterpiece of Viennese Baroque located on Karlsplatz. Built between 1716 and 1737 by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and his son Joseph Emanuel, it combines Greek, Roman and Baroque elements. Its 80-metre-high dome stands out, decorated with the fresco 'The Apotheosis of St. Charles Borromeo' by Johann Michael Rottmayr. The two side columns, inspired by Trajan's Column, show reliefs depicting scenes from the saint's life. Inside, visitors can admire carvings and altarpieces by artists such as Daniel Gran and Altomonte, as well as the high altar with a relief of St. Charles ascending to heaven. The church holds regular Vivaldi concerts in honour of the composer, who was buried in the adjoining cemetery. It is a symbol of Habsburg imperial power and an architectural landmark of Vienna.
