Halle Tony Garnier
Tony Garnier designed this building in Gerland, in the 7th arrondissement, as the cattle market of the old Mouche slaughterhouses; it opened for the Lyon Urban Exhibition of 1914 and was requisitioned as a munitions factory in the First World War. When the slaughterhouses moved to Corbas in 1967 it was left abandoned and close to demolition, until it was listed as a historic monument in 1975. The architects Reichen and Robert refurbished it in 1987-1988 and it opened as a cultural venue in December 1988. Its metal structure covers some 17,000 m² with no central pillars, supported by 22 trusses, and it is regarded as the clearest legacy of Garnier's Cité industrielle. It hosts concerts, trade fairs, comedy, the Lumière Festival and, since 1991, the Lyon Contemporary Art Biennale. You can get there by metro line B (Debourg), tram T1 and several bus lines.
