Baroque building erected in the late 17th century as the seat of the city's merchants, at a time when the Leipzig trade fairs were already central to European commerce. It stands on the Naschmarkt, just behind the Old Town Hall. In front of its façade is a statue of Goethe, who studied in Leipzig as a young man. Today it is used for functions and events.
