Sanssouci Picture Gallery
The Sanssouci Picture Gallery (Bildergalerie) is the oldest surviving museum built for a ruler in Germany, erected between 1755 and 1764 on the orders of Frederick II of Prussia. The single-storey, yellow-painted building has a central dome and marble sculptures between the windows representing allegorical figures of the arts and sciences. Inside, the gallery displays more than 140 paintings from the 16th to the 18th centuries, including works by Caravaggio, Anthony van Dyck and Peter Paul Rubens, densely hung on green walls in Baroque style. The entrance hall is notable for its gilded ornaments, white and yellow Italian marble floors, and 18th-century French sculptures and antique busts. Next to the main hall is a cabinet with smaller-format paintings.
