Institute for Nature Study
The Institute for Nature Study is a 20-hectare relict forest in Minato, Tokyo, preserving part of the area's former Musashino landscape. It is a National Natural Monument and Historic Site, managed by the National Museum of Nature and Science. Visitors can walk trails among centuries-old trees, including 300-year-old pines and Castanopsis specimens, and see an aquatic plant garden and a path lined with Zelkova serrata. The area is home to more than 200 plant species and wildlife such as Japanese raccoon dogs and mandarin ducks. Historic embankments from 500–600 years ago, the remains of a fortified house, and the site's history as a gunpowder store and imperial estate can also be seen. Educational activities are offered, including nature classes on Saturdays and nature observation on Sundays.
