Alameda Principal
The Alameda Principal is the tree-lined promenade that since the 18th century has marked the centre of Málaga, between Plaza de la Marina and the bed of the Guadalmedina. Its founding charter dates from 31 October 1783, when the Count of Floridablanca ordered its construction; the governor Luis de Unzaga drove the work on the sandy ground left by the river's sediments, in front of the old Atarazanas building and the Puerta del Mar. Poplars were planted first, later replaced by the fig trees that now shade the promenade and are around 140 years old. It measures about 350 metres, and in 1797 its extension towards the Guadalmedina was planned. During the Franco era it was called Avenida del Generalísimo, a name that reverted to Alameda Principal after the Transition. In 1966 it was extended across the Tetuán bridge.
