Convent of the Agustinas del Corpus Christi

CultureVisit: ~30 min

The convent stands in Plaza de las Agustinas, in the San Andrés district, on land of the former Arrixaca. The Augustinian nuns arrived in Murcia in 1615 and occupied several premises before this one, the order's third in the city. The first two buildings did not last, because of poor construction or the floods of the Segura. The current one was built in the early 18th century with the help of Bishop Tomás José Ruiz Montes and was completed on 13 October 1729. The façade is of brick, with three levels, a semicircular pediment and a bell gable on the left. The church has a Latin cross plan, with a raised choir, a nave of three bays, side chapels and a dome over the crossing. In the high altarpiece, by José Ganga Ripoll, is the Saint Augustine by Francisco Salzillo, made between 1755 and 1760. Also preserved are a Saint Cecilia by Roque López, from 1783, and an anonymous 16th-century Christ of the Agony. The dome has paintings by Juan Ruiz Melgarejo with the Mystic Lamb. It has been a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) since 1981.
