Hans Christian Andersen Monument
A bronze statue of the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen in Plaza de la Marina, in the heart of Málaga, next to Paseo del Parque and a few steps from the port. It is the work of the sculptor José María Córdoba, who made it in 2005 on commission from the Danish Royal House, and it was unveiled on 14 June that year by Princess Benedikte of Denmark. It shows the author full-length, seated on a bench in a relaxed pose, so that anyone can sit beside him. It commemorates his visit to the city in October 1862, which he recounted in his book "A Poet's Bazaar" ("Viaje por España"). The monument's plaque carries the sentence he wrote then: "In no other Spanish city have I felt so happy and so at ease as in Málaga." Next to the quotation are the writer's years, 1805-1875, the sculptor's name and the sponsors of the work.
