Escuelas Mayores of Salamanca
The Escuelas Mayores are the main historic building of the University of Salamanca. Its 16th-century Plateresque façade, facing the Patio de Escuelas, is divided into three tiers with medallions of the Catholic Monarchs, coats of arms of the kingdoms of Spain and a small frog hidden among the decoration, which has become a tourist attraction. Inside, a cloister with a centenary sequoia planted in 1870 organises the rooms: the historic library with shelves by Manuel de Lara Churriguera, the chapel of San Jerónimo with an altarpiece and Baroque organ of 1709, the Paraninfo and the octagonal Salón de Claustros. The Renaissance staircase, built after 1512, stands out for the decoration of its parapets. The building has also housed the Unamuno House-Museum since 1955.
