Church of El Socorro
Catholic parish church in Plaza del Socorro, in Ronda, whose origins go back to a hermitage later converted into a lazaretto and a hospital for the poor and for pilgrims. The Bishop of Málaga, Francisco de Pacheco de Córdoba, consecrated it in 1557. In the early 18th century the hermitage was demolished and a larger church was built, begun in 1706 and opened for worship three years later. That building, with a single nave with a barrel vault and a red brick tower, was destroyed in 1936. The present one is a new construction designed by the Málaga architect Enrique Atencia, with reports dated 1950 and 1956. It has a square plan, three naves and five domes, one over the crossing and four at the corners, as well as several chapels opening around it. The façade is flanked by two square towers topped with tiled spires, and the stone portal holds a figure of the Christ Child in a niche. The roofs have Baroque-style plasterwork.
