Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel

The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel stands on the Place du Carrousel, between the Louvre Museum and the Tuileries Garden, and was built in 1809 by order of Napoleon Bonaparte to commemorate his military victories. Visitors can see its four entrances and its pink marble Corinthian columns, each topped with statues of soldiers in the uniforms of Napoleon's Grande Armée. At the top stands a bronze quadriga, a replica of the horses of St Mark's in Venice, flanked by allegorical figures of Victory and Peace. The arch's bas-reliefs depict episodes from the Napoleonic campaigns, such as the Battle of Austerlitz and the entry into Vienna, and were created by several sculptors of the period. From the arch, thanks to its alignment, you can see the Tuileries Garden, the obelisk in the Place de la Concorde, the Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe and, in the opposite direction, the Louvre Pyramid.
