Zurich Opera House
The Opernhaus stands on Sechseläutenplatz, next to the Bellevue area and the lake. It was designed by the Viennese firm Fellner & Helmer after the fire that destroyed the old Aktientheater in 1890, and was built in about sixteen months, opening in 1891 under the name Stadttheater. The façade is Neoclassical, in white and grey stone, and carries busts of composers and playwrights such as Weber, Wagner and Mozart, as well as Schiller, Shakespeare and Goethe. The auditorium, in Neo-Rococo style, has about 1,100 seats. Between 1982 and 1984 the building was renovated after the youth protests of 1980 and reopened with Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Today it is home to the city's opera and ballet. The public guided tour takes in the stage, the prop, make-up and tailoring workshops, the costume store and the set storerooms, that is, the part the audience does not see at a performance.
