Equestrian statue of Frederick the Great

The equestrian statue of Frederick the Great stands at the eastern end of Unter den Linden, in Berlin's Mitte district. Created between 1839 and 1851 by Christian Daniel Rauch, it is considered a masterpiece of the Berlin school of sculpture and marks the transition from neoclassicism to realism. The bronze statue depicts Frederick II of Prussia in military uniform, ermine cloak and tricorn hat, on horseback. The monument stands 13.5 metres high, with the equestrian statue itself measuring 5.66 metres. The unusually tall pedestal (7.84 metres) features two additional bands of sculpture: the upper one shows scenes from the king's life with the four cardinal virtues at the corners, while the middle band depicts 74 notable figures of his era at life size, many in high relief. The lower band bears inscriptions naming key figures. The statue is surrounded by a wrought-iron fence and 19th-century lamp posts. During the Second World War it was protected with concrete, dismantled in 1950, reassembled in Sanssouci Park in 1963 and returned to its original location in 1980. After German reunification, it was scientifically restored, and the fence and lamp posts were recreated. It is a listed monument of the city of Berlin.
