Church and Hospital of the Charity

The Church and Hospital of the Charity is a 17th-century architectural complex in the Arenal neighbourhood, commissioned by Miguel de Mañara. The single-nave church has an interior decorated with plasterwork and a main altarpiece made by Bernardo Simón de Pineda with sculpture by Pedro Roldán, depicting the burial of Christ. Paintings by Murillo hang on the walls, such as Saint John of God carrying a sick man and Saint Elizabeth of Hungary tending the ringworm-afflicted, and at the foot of the church are the two canvases by Valdés Leal known as the "hieroglyphics of the last things". The hospital, built using naves from the old shipyards, retains rooms such as the Room of Christ, the Room of the Virgin, the Room of San Antonio and the Room of San José, and a courtyard with Tuscan columns, Dutch tiles from 1700 and marble fountains with sculptural groups of Faith and Charity. The chapel is open to the public and the hospital continues to care for elderly and sick people.
